Compare Kollmorgen Essentials Drives to AKD2G and AKD Drives

Kollmorgen Essentials Drives are most similar to AKD2G drives, including the keywords the devices use, but there are some distinct differences.

USB Connection

The Kollmorgen Essentials Drive has a USB-C connection instead of an Ethernet Service Port. WorkBench can detect drives connected to the PC by USB without any configuration needed. USB media devices can not be connected to the drive since it does not support USB Host Mode.

Multi-Industrial Ethernet

Kollmorgen Essentials Drives can be switched from one Ethernet-based fieldbus to the other using WorkBench. You can switch between the three most common Industrial Ethernet protocols: EtherCAT®, PROFINET®, and EtherNet/IP™. CAN bus is not supported.

Feedback

The Kollmorgen Essentials Drive is designed to be used as a system with Kollmorgen Essentials Motors with SFD-M feedback. That means only hybrid feedback devices (SFD3/SFD-M) are supported. The drive has a secondary feedback connector for a 24V incremental encoder which can be used as an additional feedback or for encoder emulation output. It can be used in A/B incremental, Pulse/Direction or CW/CCW mode. There is no support for differential signals. Since SFD-M has 16-bit multiturn, store multiturn is not supported on Kollmorgen Essentials Drive.

Inputs and Outputs

The Kollmorgen Essentials Drive is designed to be used with a motion controller using one of the supported Industrial Ethernet protocols. For this reason, there is no analog I/O. It also has reduced digital I/O. There are 4 Inputs and 2 Outputs that are connected via a D-sub connector.
